Oil on canvas, 81 x 66 cm
Private Collection

Van Gogh repeatedly returns to the motif of the sower. For him, the figure has a religious, life-giving meaning.

Van Gogh had great respect for religious motifs and only painted biblical scenes based on models from other artists. Here, it is Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) who inspired Van Gogh and to whom he felt deeply connected.
